Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon on July 20th, 1969 and then spent two and a half hours making footprints on a surface no foot had ever touched. Not a bad way to spend a summer afternoon. So, on this July 20th, let's celebrate the innovation and curiosity of the men and women who've given us a close up to space, that mysteriously cool world beyond our own.

Phases of the Moon – Oreo-style

TAKE A DEEP DIVE With this Activity
Supplies
  • Eight Oreos (plus some for munching, because no kid is going to let an Oreo go without a fight)
  • Plastic knife or butter knife
  • White construction paper
  • Glue
  • Marker
Very carefully, with Mr. Miyagi finesse, open each Oreo so the cream is intact on one side.  Using this diagram carefully scrape the cream center of each Oreo with plastic knife or butter knife to look like the eight phases of the moon: First Quarter, Waxing Crescent, New Moon, Waning Crescent, Third Quarter, Waning Gibbous, Full Moon, Waxing Gibbous  Arrange Oreos in the order listed above in a circle on your white construction paper going clockwise.  Glue down and label each phase.  Optional: Draw an earth to go in the center for your Oreo moons to orbit!

Perseus

LOOK UP THE STARS
Really, we could "moon" over any constellation this week, but let's celebrate the heroes of space with Perseus, the mythical Greek hero who defeated Medusa with his trusty sword. The Perseid Meteor shower is one of the biggest and brightest and can be seen in the northern hemisphere between mid-July to the end of August.
