Navigating Big Feelings During New Beginnings

The start of a new season or a new year often inspires us to set goals, refresh routines and embrace change. For children, however, “new” can feel exciting and overwhelming all at once. Whether it's starting a new activity, welcoming a babysitter or even trying a different bedtime routine.

The good news? With a little preparation and the right tools, fresh starts can become confidence-building moments that help your little ones grow, adapt and thrive.

Why change feels so big to our little ones

Because children thrive on predictability, routines help them feel safe and in control of their world. When something changes, even when the change is positive, it can introduce feelings of uncertainty.

These worries don’t always show up as words. Instead, they might show up as clinginess, big emotions, sleep disruptions or resistance to new situations. That’s why preparing children emotionally for change is just as important as preparing them practically.

Start with conversations that build confidence

Before a new experience begins, talk about what your little one can expect in simple, reassuring language. Describe the setting, the people and expected routine. Most importantly, invite your child to share how they feel and ask questions. Even very young children can sense the assuredness and confidence in your voice, even if they don’t fully understand what you’re saying, so talk to children early and often about what to expect.

For example, if you're introducing a new bedtime routine, you might say: “After bathtime, we’ll read our story like always and then we’ll try sleeping in our own bed tonight with the nightlight on.”

You can also reassure them with messages like:

  • “I’ll be nearby if you need me.”
  • “It's okay to feel nervous. New things can create big emotions, and that's normal.”
  • “You’ll still have time to relax and play.”

When children feel heard and understood, they are more likely to approach change with confidence.

How books help children process change

One of the most powerful ways we can prepare our little ones for new experiences is through reading. Stories allow children to explore unfamiliar situations in a safe, comforting way. They see characters face challenges, express emotions and ultimately succeed — which helps normalize their own feelings.

At Kiddie Academy®, we often encourage families to use books as conversation starters, especially during transitions like starting at a new school or meeting their teacher. Our children’s book “Day One is Fun,” was created with this purpose in mind — to help young learners feel excited and confident about starting their first day of child care.

When children see characters navigating first days, they begin to understand why uncertainty is normal, and that fun, friendships and success often follow. Reading together also gives parents natural opportunities to pause, ask questions and help them connect the story to their own experiences.

Create routines that support new beginnings

Once the new experience begins, consistent routines help reinforce security and independence. Predictable moments throughout the day, morning cuddles, a bedtime story or after-dinner check-in can provide comfort when other parts of their day feel unfamiliar.

Here are a few ways to build supportive routines during times of change:

  • Practice ahead of time: Walk through what will happen or try parts of the new routine before it begins.
  • Keep pieces of connection: A special goodbye hug, shared favorite song or mini dance break creates emotional continuity even when their days are packed.
  • Celebrate the small wins: Acknowledge their bravery, efforts and progress, because trying, especially when something feels hard, deserves recognition.

Over time, routines help move your little one from “This feels different” to "I've got this.”

By combining open conversations, comforting routines and support tools like books, parents can turn new beginnings into moments of empowerment. As the year unfolds, remember that every fresh start, big or small, is also a chance for your little ones to discover just how resilient and capable they truly are.  And sometimes, all it takes is a good story and a little encouragement to help them step forward with confidence!
